Event Description:
Many organizations have spent years building shared language around diversity, equity, and inclusion. But understanding equity and knowing what to do about inequity are different skills. This interactive workshop moves beyond definitions and awareness to build the practical skills to recognize and respond to inequity, address its root causes, and cultivate and sustain more equitable conditions. Drawing from Equity Literacy principles alongside a systems-change approach, we’ll explore how individual experiences of inequity connect to organizational policies, practices, culture, and decision-making, and how changing those systems can move equity from an organizational value into everyday practice.
About the Speaker:
Nel Taylor, they/them he/him (Umatilla) is an organizational equity strategist and ethical fundraising consultant with over 15 years of nonprofit experience. Their introduction to nonprofits came through their transition out of houselessness at 18, when their story and labor were exploited by a nonprofit for its fundraising efforts. That experience shaped their career and commitment to shift the traditional practices that cause harm in the nonprofit sector.
As the Founder and Steward of Now This Consulting, Nel guides organizations through operationalizing anti-racist principles into their everyday operations and practices, moving their clients beyond theory, into direct action and organizational change. Their work helps nonprofits build systems that honor people over performance and center community liberation. They approach their work with a simply stated motto: “I’m just out here trying to Indigenize the nonprofit sector”
