UPDATE 10/23/25: GoFundMe put out a statement on LinkedIn apologizing to nonprofits. The statement also outlines the quick, corrective actions they’ll take to remove the unauthorized Nonprofit Pages, prevent further harm, and rebuild trust with nonprofits.
In case you didn’t hear, GoFundMe recently created donation pages for approximately 1.4 million U.S. nonprofits – including many in Montana – without asking for permission. These pages may look legitimate to potential donors, but nonprofit organizations did not authorize them and, in many cases, are not managing them. That means your supporters could be donating through a third-party platform without your knowledge or consent.
- Check if your organization has an unauthorized GoFundMe page by searching Nonprofit Pages here. Search by both your organization name and your EIN.
Good news! Thanks to advocacy from the National Council of Nonprofits and nonprofits across the nation, GoFundMe has agreed to:
- Remove all unclaimed Nonprofit Pages.
- If you already claimed your page and want to remove it, GoFundMe plans to share easy-to-follow steps soon.
- Change the default so that Nonprofit Pages do not automatically have Search Engine Optimization.
- Remove and deindex the Nonprofit Pages so they no longer appear in online searches.
- Give nonprofits the choice to opt-in to creating a Nonprofit Page.
