Event Description:

At the intersection of operations and governance, MNA’s Nonprofit Leader Retreat is designed for Executive Directors, Board Chairs, and other board and executive leaders who want to strengthen the relationship between governance and operational leadership. In uncertain times, the shared work of leading an organization’s mission forward is more important than ever. To move forward strategically, board and staff leadership must be able to operate at a high level, requiring time, intention, and relationship – things that can be hard to carve out time for during the year. This retreat offers an opportunity to pause, reflect, and build a plan forward, together. 

Ideal participants are Executive Directors and Board Chairs from the same organization – priority registration will be granted to organizations who plan to bring at least two participants, one staff person and one board member. Additional board or staff leaders are also invited to attend. 

Spend two days exploring personal leadership strengths and opportunities, deepening relationships, identifying priorities to strengthen board leadership and strategy, and relaxing at Fairmont Hot Springs with other nonprofit leaders.  

Attendees will come with: 

• Pre-identified priorities to strengthen organizational performance. These will be identified through an entry survey and optional pre-retreat webinars on board best practices. Example priority areas might include: 

• Improving board processes such as role definition, calendars, committees, agendas, meeting facilitation, recruiting and onboarding, or evaluation processes 

• Strengthening board/staff relationships by building trust or navigating current or potential tension or conflict 

• Energizing board engagement as strategic leaders of the organization through clarity of roles, opportunities, composition, and facilitation 

Attendees will leave with: 

• Language to share personal strengths, preferences, and needs with your leadership team. 

• A foundation to continue building a strong and resilient relationship between board and operational leaders 

• Prioritized steps to strengthen board performance, engagement, or relationships 

• Connections with other leaders in Montana 

This program is an evolution of our Catalyst Leadership program and summit, developed to impact board and staff leaders. 

Program Timeline Overview: 

• May | Complete entry surveys and optional board training courses, including tools for high performing boards 

• Sunday, 5/31 | Optional Welcome Dinner  

• Monday, 6/1 | Explore personal strengths, work styles, and relationship management. Time to work together in pairs and connect with other peers. Development of board action plan. 

• Tuesday, 6/2 | Test board action plans through identifying and addressing potential barriers and conflict, learning skills to move through pressure points. Gather feedback from peers on action plans and accountability.  

• September | Follow up call to connect on progress, barriers, opportunities 

• December | Follow up call to connect on progress, barriers, opportunities 

• June 2027 | Follow up call to connect on progress, barriers, opportunities
