Course Description

We all hear that we should be investing and saving for the future. But knowing where to start, what account to use, and how employer‑sponsored retirement plans fit into the picture can feel overwhelming. This practical, accessible webinar is designed for nonprofit staff who want to confidently invest their own money, as well as HR professionals tasked with offering and explaining retirement benefits to employees.

Participants will learn the Financial Order of Operations: a clear framework for deciding where to save or invest their next dollar, along with a plain‑language overview of common investment account types, including 401(k)s, Traditional and Roth IRAs, and taxable brokerage accounts. We’ll explore how these accounts work, key differences to understand, and how employer retirement plans intersect with personal investing goals. Whether you’re making your first investment decision or supporting staff through benefits education, this session will provide the foundational knowledge needed to make informed, values‑aligned financial choices beyond a basic savings account.

About the Trainer

Seth Gillim: I was born and raised in Underhill, Vermont and currently live with my wife and two daughters in Cambridge, not five miles from the house where I grew up. After getting a B.A. in History and Literature from Bard College, I spent many years working in horticulture before getting an MBA from UVM’s Grossman School of Business Sustainable Innovation MBA program. Prior to One Day In July, I worked in a director role for a number of regenerative agriculture start-ups (fun fact: I was the senior project manager on the largest chestnut orchard development in the United States, at over 1800 acres). My professional passion has always been focused on figuring out how we can grow and sustain vibrant rural economies.
